Wet Grinding VS Dry Grinding: How to Choose According to Your Raw Ore Conditions

Published: Sep 04, 2026 | Mineral Processing Technology

Overview

Grinding is the core stage to liberate valuable minerals from gangue before gravity separation, flotation or leaching. Wet grinding and dry grinding are two mainstream ball mill grinding methods. The selection is not simply based on cost, but mainly determined by raw ore moisture, clay content, target mineral type, local water supply, tailings disposal and environmental regulations. For gold, copper and other metal ore beneficiation projects, wrong grinding selection will lead to low recovery rate and high operation cost.

Core Difference: Wet Grinding & Dry Grinding

Item Wet Grinding Dry Grinding
Working Principle Add water during milling, slurry transportation, fine discharge No water addition, use air flow to take out fine powder
Raw Ore Suitability Ore with clay, high moisture; gold/copper sulfide ore, oxide ore Dry, low-clay ore; materials sensitive to water
Recovery Performance Better mineral liberation, less over-grinding, high recovery Easy over-grinding, fine dust loss, lower recovery
Water Requirement High water consumption, need water recycling system Almost no water, suitable for arid areas
Dust & Environment Low dust; need tailings pond & slurry treatment Heavy dust, must equip dust collector
Operation Cost Medium consumption moderate; water & pump cost added High liner & medium wear; high power for air classification

How to Select According to Raw Ore Conditions

✅ Choose Wet Grinding If:

  • Raw ore contains clay, sticky mud, or moisture over 5%
  • Follow-up process: gravity separation, flotation, cyanide leaching, heap leaching
  • Water resource is sufficient, tailings pond is available
  • Target high metal recovery for gold, copper, lead zinc ore

✅ Choose Dry Grinding If:

  • Local area is extremely arid with scarce water source
  • Ore is dry, hard, no sticky clay, low moisture
  • Subsequent process requires dry powder products
  • Strict restrictions on tailings slurry storage

Common Pitfalls in Grinding Selection

  1. Use dry grinding for clay-rich ore: ore block agglomeration, mill blockage, poor dissociation
  2. Blindly pick wet grinding in desert mining area: huge water transportation cost
  3. Ignore follow-up beneficiation flow: grinding type must match gravity / flotation / leaching
  4. Underestimate power consumption of dry grinding air classifier

FAQ

Q: Which grinding has lower investment cost?

For most gold mines with enough water, wet grinding has lower total investment. Dry grinding needs dust removal system and air classifier, raising CAPEX.

Q: Can I switch wet grinding to dry grinding after buying a ball mill?

Not recommended. Ball mill liner, discharge structure are different. Changing mode needs large modification.

Q: For rock gold ore, wet or dry grinding better?

Wet grinding is the mainstream choice for rock gold, especially if later cyanide leaching or gravity separation is adopted.
