Crusher & Screen Selection Guide — How to Choose the Right Mining Equipment

Understanding Your Application First

Selecting the right crushing and screening equipment starts with a clear understanding of your application. The key factors are: the material being processed (type, hardness, abrasiveness, moisture), the feed size distribution, the required product sizes and production capacity, and the project location and operating environment.

WSHT engineers typically start by asking customers about these basic parameters — then recommend the most suitable equipment configuration.

Primary Crusher Selection — Jaw vs Impact vs Gyratory

For primary crushing of run-of-mine rock and blasted quarry feed, jaw crushers are the most common choice for medium-hard to very-hard rock with feed sizes up to about 1200 mm. Impact crushers are preferred for softer and medium-hard materials (limestone, construction debris) where well-shaped cubical products are important. For very large mines with high throughputs, gyratory-style crushers are used.

WSHT supplies all three types of primary crushers and can recommend the right choice based on your specific application.

Secondary & Tertiary Crusher Selection

For secondary and tertiary crushing of hard and abrasive rock (granite, basalt, hard river gravel, iron ore, copper ore), cone crushers are the standard choice. WSHT spring-release and hydraulic-release cone crushers deliver reliable performance and high product quality for these applications.

For producing manufactured sand (m-sand) and fine aggregate, VSI (vertical shaft impact) crushers produce well-shaped cubical particles with low fines content.

Screen Selection — Size, Motion and Media

Vibrating screens are available in circular-motion, linear-motion and banana-screen designs. Circular-motion screens are the most common for general sizing duties. Linear-motion screens are preferred for dewatering and high-capacity sizing. Banana screens (multi-slope) are used for high-capacity sizing of hard-to-screen materials.

Screen media selection — woven wire, polyurethane, rubber or perforated plate — depends on the material, the aperture size and the wear environment. WSHT screens are available with all of these media types.

Getting the Right Configuration

The most reliable way to determine the best equipment configuration for your project is to discuss your application with an experienced engineer.
