Tailings Management & Environmental Treatment — Water Recycling & Dry Stacking

Modern Tailings Management — Beyond Conventional Slurry Tailing

Mining operators are under increasing pressure to manage tailings safely and with minimal environmental impact. Modern tailings management approaches include tailings thickening, filtration and dry stacking, tailings water recycling, co-disposal of tailings with waste rock, and in-pit tailings disposal — all designed to reduce water consumption, minimize environmental footprint and improve long-term storage safety.

WSHT designs tailings management systems that integrate smoothly with the upstream process plant and meet applicable environmental standards.

Tailings Thickening & Water Recycling

Tailings thickeners and high-rate / high-density thickeners dewater process tailings, recovering clear water for reuse in the process plant. Water recycling rates of 70-90% are common in modern mineral processing plants — dramatically reducing fresh water intake and tailings water discharge.

WSHT designs tailings thickening and water recycling circuits sized to match each plant's throughput and water balance requirements.

Tailings Filtration & Dry Stacking

For projects where conventional slurry tailings disposal is impractical or undesirable (water-scarce regions, seismic zones, environmentally-sensitive areas), tailings filtration (using vacuum disc filters, pressure filters or belt filter presses) followed by dry stacking is a growing alternative.

Dry-stacked tailings can be compacted, covered and progressively rehabilitated, reducing long-term environmental liability. WSHT designs tailings filtration and dry stacking process flowsheets and plant layouts.

Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) Design & Operation

Conventional tailings storage facilities (TSFs) require careful engineering including site selection, geotechnical design of dams and embankments, water balance management, seepage control, decant / supernatant water recovery and closure / rehabilitation planning. WSHT works with specialized geotechnical and TSF engineering partners for tailings storage facility design.

Our scope covers tailings pumping and pipeline systems, TSF water recovery and return water systems, and tailings discharge distribution systems.

Environmental Compliance & Cyanide Destruction

For gold and silver processing plants using cyanide, WSHT designs cyanide destruction systems (INCO SO2/air, hydrogen peroxide, Caro's acid processes) to meet discharge standards for weak-acid-dissociable (WAD) cyanide. General environmental compliance including water treatment, dust control, acid mine drainage prevention and tailings rehabilitation planning are also addressed as part of WSHT's EPC project delivery.

Environmental and tailings management are integral to every WSHT EPC project.
