High-Clay Alluvial Gold Washing Process: Solve Clay Ball & Fine Gold Recovery In One Step

Many African alluvial gold mines face two paired headaches: hard clay balls wrapped around fine gold particles, and high loss of micro gold during washing. If clay lumps are not fully disintegrated before classification, gold trapped inside clay balls will be discarded together with tailings, dropping overall gold recovery down to 40~60%. A standard washing flow only screening large stones cannot resolve this issue. This article introduces an integrated high-clay alluvial gold washing process, which breaks clay agglomerates and recovers fine gold in a single continuous line.

Why High-Clay Placer Gold Causes Low Recovery

  • Clay ball encapsulation: Viscous wet clay wraps fine gold grains tightly. Ordinary trommel only sieves the exterior, leaving gold locked inside clay balls into waste.
  • Slime overflow loss: After clay breaks, ultra-fine gold (<74μm) flows away with muddy water, simple sluice boxes cannot capture micro gold efficiently.
  • Screen blinding: Sticky clay sticks to screen mesh, blocking screening capacity. Actual throughput can fall by 30%~50% from rated capacity.

Integrated Process Flow (One-step Solution)

Raw ore → Feeding → Clay scrubbing & disintegration → Trommel screening → Gravity separation for coarse gold → Centrifugal concentrator for fine gold → Tailings dewatering

  1. Feeding & Pre-wetting: Hopper + belt feeder, add low-pressure water to pre-soak raw alluvial ore to reduce clay viscosity before scrubbing.
  2. Clay Scrubber (Core Unit): High-torque scrubber machine agitates raw ore violently, breaks clay balls completely. This step ensures gold particles are fully liberated from clay matrix. For ore with 25%~45% clay content, scrubbing time controls between 3~8 min.
  3. Trommel Screen: Remove large stones & gravels; mesh size customizable, separate coarse fraction and fine slurry. Prevent screen blockage by internal water spray nozzles.
  4. Coarse Gold Capture: Sluice Box Recover +0.1mm coarse gold from screened sand slurry, low operation cost, suitable for continuous bulk processing.
  5. Fine Gold Capture: Centrifugal Gold Concentrator Process overflow fine slurry, capture liberated fine gold down to 20μm, greatly improve total recovery.
  6. Tailings Dewatering: Thickener or dewatering screen, recycle process water to cut water consumption, reduce site water demand for remote mines.

Process Comparison: Traditional Washing VS Integrated High-Clay Gold Washing

Item Traditional Trommel Only Scrubber + Trommel + Centrifugal Concentrator
Handling Clay Content <15% 20%~45%
Gold Recovery Rate 40~60% 75~88%
Clay Ball Problem Serious, gold locked loss Fully disintegrated
Fine Gold Capture (<74μm) Poor, heavy loss Excellent
Screen Blocking Risk High, frequent cleaning Low

Capacity Reference for Typical High-Clay Gold Plants

The line can be customized from 5TPH small mobile set to 100TPH stationary washing plant, most popular models for African mines: 10-15TPH, 20-30TPH, 30-50TPH.

FAQ

Q1: How much water does high-clay scrubbing consume?

Normally 8~12 m³ water per ton ore. With tailings dewatering recycling, fresh water consumption drops to 2~4 m³/t, suitable for mines with limited water source.

Q2: Can this process run as mobile skid-mounted plant?

Yes. Scrubber + trommel + centrifugal concentrator can be integrated on mobile chassis, easy relocation for seasonal alluvial gold sites.

Q3: What if gold particle is ultra-fine less than 20 micron?

For gold finer than 20μm, pure gravity separation has limits. We can add slime pre-concentration or amalgamation / CIL circuit as optional upgrade according to lab ore test report.

Q4: Do I need ore test before equipment selection?

Strongly recommended. Clay content, gold grain size distribution, specific gravity of gangue will decide scrubber power, screen mesh and concentrator model.

Final Tips for Mine Investors

Many mine owners buy simple trommel wash plant first, only discover heavy gold loss after production. For high-clay alluvial deposits, skipping scrubbing is the biggest mistake. Prioritize full ore sampling and mineral test, then match scrubber + screening + fine gold recovery combination, to maximize gold yield and shorten ROI cycle.
