Indonesia's Top Met Coal Producer Targets Higher Volume Growth
PT Adaro Minerals Indonesia Tbk (IDX: ADMR), Indonesia's largest metallurgical coal producer, has reported strong production growth and continued infrastructure development to support higher volume targets. The company, through subsidiary PT Maruwai Coal, achieved production of 6.63 million tonnes in FY2024 — a 30% increase year-on-year — and is advancing both mining expansion and downstream mineral processing initiatives.
Mining Expansion Progress
- FY24 production: 6.63 Mt of metallurgical coal, up 30% year-on-year
- FY25 sales guidance: 5.6-6.1 million tonnes
- Infrastructure upgrades: 39 km hauling road upgrade, second barge loading conveyor (3,000 tph capacity), new 500-bed employee camp, and additional fuel storage facilities
- Strip ratio: Improved to 3.55x from 3.66x in 2023 through enhanced operational efficiency
- Market diversification: Japan (29%), China (16%), South Korea (14%), with domestic sales at 32%
Aluminium Smelter Development
Through subsidiary PT Kalimantan Aluminium Industry (KAI), Adaro is developing a 500,000 tonne per year aluminium smelter in the Kaltara Industrial Park in North Kalimantan — the company's first step in supporting Indonesia's downstream mineral processing ambitions. The smelter secured financing of US$981.4 million and Rp 1,547.9 billion, with the commercial operation date (COD) process targeted for end of 2025. Phase 1 capacity can be expanded up to 1.5 million tonnes annually.
Strategic Position
Adaro holds five Coal Contracts of Work covering 146,579 hectares in Central and East Kalimantan, with total resources of 975.6 Mt and reserves of 173 Mt. The company's Enviromet branded metallurgical coal products are increasingly gaining recognition in global markets. FY2025 capital expenditure guidance is US$300-325 million, including equity investments in the KAI aluminium smelter. CEO Christian Ariano Rachmat emphasised the company's focus on consistent volume growth and strategic investments to support future development.
